From Mei Tai to Meh Dai

Being half Asian and coming to Canada when I was 5 and not knowing a lick of English, it wasn’t that long before I completely lost my native language of Chinese (Cantonese). And much later on as I was growing up, I was always corrected by my older aunts and uncles that my Cantonese turned terrible and how can I be such a wretched person to let that language go. Even a slight mis-pronunciation from an “ah” to an “uh”, could turn a conversation to mean something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT and offendable.

So it is not surprising that this recently came to light from the Asian Mom Support Network that the spelling of Mei Tai was incorrect because the way it is spelled is not the way that it is said, and that it should be Meh Dai. Which is absolutely true because my mom and aunts always used a soft “T”, or a hard “D” when referring to the Meh Dai.

Now there are hundreds of other Cantonese to English conversions in food that I think is not giving it accurate respect such as “Char Siu Bao” or “Har Gau”. The “R” should be eliminated because it not even in the vocab of the Cantonese language, and the “Bao” is between a “P” and a “B” but really, how can you even translate that into English? You can’t, unless you start making up new letters in the alphabet.

But anyway, and as my 10 year old would say You say Tomato, I say Tomato, to which I will say, That doesn’t apply to Cantonese, because if you say “Hello, how are you” with even the slightest mispronunciation, you could be essentially telling that person “To go and kill themselves.

Lesson is: Respect the Culture!
